Poker Table - Choosing the Perfect One

Poker tables are a necessity for any serious poker player. Not just because playing on a poker table is more realistic, but because poker tables are designed to make playing poker easier.

It can be difficult to pick cards up off of hard tables without bending them. You want to avoid bending your cards since this could effectively "mark" the card causing the whole deck to be useless.

In addition, the soft surface of a poker table protects your chips from damage. This is especially important for the more delicate clay poker chips. The cost of a poker table can be a small price to pay to protect a chip set that could have cost over a thousand dollars.

But how do you choose a poker table? What tables are available and how much should you expect to spend?

Here's a list of three different styles of Texas Hold'em tables along with the pros and cons of each.

Permanent Poker Table

A permanent poker table is immovable- at least; it's immovable without the help of a few friends. These tables are usually made out of a nice wood like oak, teak, or mahogany. They also use high quality felt and look great! This is also the most expensive of three poker tables we're going to cover.

Pros

These poker tables are made with high-quality material that looks great.

They're also more durable than less permanent poker tables.

They generally come with features such as cup holders and sliding draws to store your poker chips.

Cons

They're difficult to move around the house and impossible to move to another location without serious help.

They're expensive; often costing several thousand dollars

You may have to kill a friend if they spill something on it-justifiable homicide.

Folding Poker Tables

These tables are more mobile that the poker table mentioned above. They're basically regular folding tables with a poker top built into them.

Pros

Folding poker tables are affordable; generally costing only a couple hundred dollars

They're easy to move, though you may need a truck if you plan on moving it from house to house.

They're easy to set up and take down.

Cons

They're less substantial that permanent poker tables.

They're generally made from lower quality material.

They're difficult to transport in small cars.

Portable Poker Table Tops

A portable poker table top is a poker table top that folds up and fits in a carrying case roughly two or three times the size of a briefcase. These table tops aren't as impressive as "real" poker tables, but they make up for their shortcomings in other ways.

Pro

Portable poker table tops are very affordable; generally costing less than $100.

These tables can be carried anywhere and are the perfect choice if you have to change locations of your home game frequently.

The table can be set-up in seconds.

You don't have to murder any friends if they spill something on it.

Cons

These tables are generally made out of very cheap material and the felt tears easily.

They don't look as good as more substantial tables.

Decide what features are important to you can shop around. No matter what your price range is, there's a poker table that's right for you.
